Why You Need to Follow Your Aftercare Instructions So Carefully After Oral Surgery Oral Surgery, Oral Care, Restoration Dentistry, blog Why You Need to Follow Your Aftercare Instructions So Carefully After Oral SurgeryAfter you have oral surgery, it's important that you carefully follow the aftercare instructions that Madison Oral Surgery & Dental Implants provides you with. These don't only tell you how to take care of your mouth correctly, so you heal properly, but they also tell you what you should eat and what types of activities you can engage in.

Why It's Important to Take Care of Your Mouth Properly After Oral Surgery

You're told to do things like bite on gauze and apply ice packs so that you don't bleed too much. This will also keep your mouth from swelling – something that won't peak until 36 – 72 hours after surgery. Sleeping with your head elevated also helps minimize swelling. Make sure you only eat soft foods before slowly advancing back to your normal diet based on your own comfort level. You'll also want to use caution with hot foods. Avoid things like popcorn, nuts, and seeds. This diet will help you not bite or burn your mouth. It also helps to make sure that nothing becomes lodged in your surgical site. Smokers also can't smoke after their surgery. In fact, they shouldn't smoke for the first two days after surgery since doing so not only delays healing, but also increases the risk of dry socket by 30%. Even when you do your best to follow your aftercare instructions, sometimes you can develop some bad conditions. For instance, you'll want to watch for a fever, severe swelling or bleeding, a rash, difficulty breathing, severe vomiting, prolonged pain, and continued numbness. These can be indications that you're having negative side effects from the surgery itself and you'll want to make sure you call us right away.
