What To Look For When Looking For Oral Cancer At Home

Posted on 3/20/2020 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
What To Look For When Looking For Oral Cancer At HomeAccording to statistics, almost 53.000 people have oral cancer and about 10,000 end up dying from it. Oral cancer does not have to end up in death. If detected early, oral cancer can be treated and have your life return to normalcy.

The problem is that most people don't know what to look for when doing a self-diagnosis at home. This article will let you know what to look for when doing a self-diagnosis for oral cancer at home.

How To Do A Self-diagnosis For Oral Cancer At Home

If we can detect oral cancer in the initial stages, then the survival rates for the disease would be higher than it is currently. To be able to detect oral cancer early, you will have to be on the lookout and regularly perform self-diagnosis at home. Here are tips on what to look for when performing a self-diagnosis.

Check For Any Sores and Swelling In Your Face and Neck

Normally, your neck, face, and head should be symmetrical. Any kind of asymmetry could be a pointer to a problem. Such kind of asymmetry can be caused by swellings, sores, and lumps on only one side of the face or the neck and not the other. You can check for lumps, sores, and swellings by checking yourself with a mirror in a well-lit room. You should also watch out for any unusual growths or moles.

Feel For Any Bumps On The Lips And The Cheeks

You should also pull up your upper lips and feel for any lumps on the gums or the inside of the lips. Additionally, look out for any discolored spots on the gums or lips. Discoloration can result in red or white patches on the lips or gums. If you are not on any medication that makes your gums to get discolored, it is advisable to schedule a checkup in our clinic. It is also good to feel inside your cheeks with your fingers for any bumps.

Check the Color of The Roof Of Your Mouth

Sometimes, oral cancer starts at the roof of your mouth. So even if you find the other areas to be good, you should never forget to check the roof of your mouth for any lumps or discoloration. If you can't see the roof of your mouth from a mirror, you can ask a family member to check it out for you. Lastly, check the texture and color of your tongue for any unusual signs.

Do not panic if you notice anything unusual in your mouth. It does not necessarily mean that you have oral cancer. It could be a pointer to other oral problems. Instead, visit our clinic for a more comprehensive oral cancer screening. Call us today to schedule a session.
