When is Pericoronitis Something You Need to Worry About? |
Posted on 1/20/2019 by Tessa Smith-Greisch |
If you hear that you suffer from pericoronitis, you may run to the computer or medical dictionary to find out what it is. Others may just wonder if it is something they should worry about. The answer is that it is a good idea to know what it is and that can help you determine if you have to worry about it.
What is It?
Pericoronitis is a condition where the part of the wisdom tooth breaks through the layer of skin that covers it. The rest of the tooth remains under the skin. It is possible that the tooth will not fully break through the skin or it may grow in completely. The treatment depends on what is happening with the tooth and the symptoms it causes.
When to Do Something
The most common symptoms of pericoronitis is pain and swelling around the tooth. It is possible to treat these symptoms with over the counter pain medications and rinsing the mouth with warm salt water. If this helps manage the symptoms and the rest of the tooth emerges, there is no need to worry about it. It is a temporary situation that does not require any other types of treatment.
If the pain is severe and the simple home treatments do not provide enough relief, then it is time to take the next step. It is possible that prescription medications can help manage the symptoms until they resolve themselves. It is also possible that the tooth will not emerge on its own or that the tooth is not healthy and is causing the pain and swelling. In these cases, extraction is often the best option.
If you are suffering from pain, discomfort or swelling of your teeth and gums, do not hesitate to contact our office to schedule an appointment.
