What Gets Done When You Break a Tooth

Posted on 11/13/2017 by Tessa Smith-Greisch
If you have broken a tooth-whether it was done as a result of physical trauma such as an athletic event or from biting down incorrectly on something-you should come visit us right away. When you come in, we will closely examine the tooth and determine what can be done.

When you have broken a tooth, there are a few things that can happen. Of course, the specific course of action we will take will vary depending on the circumstances, but in general here is what you might expect.

Repairing a Broken Tooth

If a tooth has a break that is not extreme, we may be able to repair it. This is most often seen in teeth where the pulp inside the dentin is not exposed. Depending on the tooth and the type and severity of the break, we may be able to affix a dental construction such as a cap or crown on the tooth.

Removing a Broken Tooth

Sometimes it is just not feasible to repair a broken tooth. For instance, if the tooth is broken cleanly in half-and the pulpy root is exposed-sometimes it is better to extract the tooth and explore replacements.

While we always do our very best to save a tooth, if it does become necessary to remove it, we will sit down with you first and explain the situation. We will tell you what we have found, and the reasons why we suggest removal. Finally, we will be happy to help you explore your various replacement options such as a dental implant, a bridge, or some other option.

We are here to help keep your smile healthy and strong. If you have any questions-especially if you have broken a tooth-please do not hesitate to give us a call.
