One of the main concerns that we have when trying to fit patients with dental implants and bridges is the health of their jaw bones.
These bones are responsible for holding the implants in place and when they are too weak, or not present at all, it's impossible to lock the implants in place firmly enough.
Most patients have no trouble getting implants installed in the area of the lower mouth, because that tends to have thicker bone that's much more solid. The upper mouth tends to have much softer bone though, and it often suffers from bone atrophy more quickly as well.
If you come in to see us for implants and we tell you your bone is weak or there isn't enough of it for implants, that doesn't mean you can never have implants, it simply means we have to explore other options, including a sinus lift.
What is a Sinus Lift?A sinus lift is a procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw where the molars would be at the top of the mouth. This added bone creates the strength necessary to mount implants and lock in a full-mouth bridge in most instances.
We routinely recommend sinus lifts to our patients when they don't have enough bone at the top of the mouth, or when their sinuses are positioned too closely to the mouth for implants to be safe to put in.
We can effectively increase the thickness of bone in those areas with the procedure and it makes it possible to achieve the implant-based smile that you always wanted.
If you've had trouble getting implants in the past, or you are concerned about your chances of getting implants successfully, come to us to see what we can do for you. Even if you are an extreme case there is a good chance we can help you with sinus lifts to get the implants that you want.
